Brighton Marina, the launch point for every safari along this stretch of coast, is the largest artificial marina in Europe — 127 acres of water reclaimed from the Channel behind two arms of concrete breakwater completed in 1979. It was built for yachts.
It ended up as the gateway to one of southern England's most photographed shorelines.
West of the harbour mouth lies the Victorian seafront: the 1899 Palace Pier, the burnt skeleton of the West Pier, the i360 tower on the site of its old entrance kiosks. East, the shingle gives way to chalk. Within eight nautical miles the coast rises into Seven Sisters, a run of unbroken chalk cliffs formed from compressed marine plankton laid down some 90 million years ago, now part of the South Downs National Park. The water itself has history. The English Channel here is shallow, tidal, and busy: Newhaven ferries, fishing boats out of Shoreham, and the wind farm at Rampion, whose 116 turbines stand roughly 13 kilometres offshore and have redrawn the horizon since 2018. Guided operators run these routes under RYA-aligned briefings because the Channel demands respect. Tide, swell, and visibility govern departures more than the calendar does.
The cliffs remain the draw. Birling Gap, Cuckmere Haven, and Beachy Head — at 162 metres, the highest chalk sea cliff in Britain — read differently from the waterline than from the coast path above. From a ski or a RIB, the strata are legible: flint bands, slumped chalk falls, the pale scree of ongoing erosion measured at roughly 30 to 40 centimetres a year.
Brighton has sold sea air since Dr Richard Russell prescribed seawater bathing in 1750 and the Prince Regent followed.
